Company history

Qsound really started around 22-23 years ago when our founder Scott Cameron was producing tracks for some pretty well known artists, that he used to perform with as a Guitar player. This was originally out of his home studio, which at the time being a teenager was his parents converted garage.

Scott was interested not only in performing at a young age and all things Guitar, but he found himself fascinated by the world of recording, Scott fondly shared a story where, when he was only 10 years old, his parents had saved up to help him produce his 2nd album with a now local producer called Joe Daniels. Joe had worked with anyone and everyone in the states and some extremely high profile artists in his time. He now resided on the coast with his little studio Rockhound. Scott remembers finding ways to make mistakes so he could stay at the studio longer. (A fact he now realised probably cost his parents and his gig earnings dearly) Scott was fascinated in recording equipment particularly in consoles and microphones and loved the creative elements of how much you could change and shape the sound by using the right microphone or the right microphone placement and how compressors could not just contain and control erratic dynamics but completely change the feel, sound and soul of a instrument, long before any EQ was even contemplated. This passion turned into an obsession and he used to go to bed dreaming of owning a studio like Joe's one day.  (Little did he know that obsession would turn into, not only a reality, but by far surpass even his wildest dreams) Scott loved hanging around studios and would run errands or clean the studios if it meant staying longer.

Over the years Scott started to become known for his Mixing skills, this was at a time when a seperate mix engineer was still far less than the norm. Normally the person who tracked the record mixed the record. Scott started working with long time mentor and friend Jade Hurley, not just on the stage, as in the past, but off stage in the studio, during these years mixing started to become more and more the focus of Scotts production work and pretty soon he was mixing tracks recorded by other artists. Scott had a knack for manipulating the sound of a record masterfully. By the time he was in his later teens Scott had mixed records that had Sold Gold & Platinum sales. Some of his work had even made it onto notable American TV shows.

Eventually this passion expanded so wildly it started to take over both the garage and the 2 joining bedrooms.  Scott produced countless records, singles, audiobooks, audio for TVC's, jingles, etc out of this humble space over the next 15 years. During this time Scott rebranded from the Original 'Scotrok Studios' name to Queensland Sound Group which eventually became shortened to Qsound. The company started to work a lot in the live production field also doing sound and lighting production for various international and national touring artists, consulting on design & venue installations. All the while continuing to produce as a Studio.  Also during this 15 year time period Scott had become cast as the lead performer of The Buddy Holly Story musical and performed all over the world as Buddy Holly including London and America. On return to Australia during the 2009 national tour of Buddy The Musical Scott was again still producing music from mobile setups in his hotel rooms. An obsession which had started as a kid in the days of tape recording Scott had recorded on all forms, 2" Tape, Dat, Minidisk and of course, the early days of Pro Tools or its PC counterparts; Cake Walk, Cubase, Nuendo and Band in a Box - Scott jokingly recalls when protools used to have the old yellow "PRO" logo or the days when it, "really wasn't much use for larger track counts so Protools would chase the tape machine in Sync and mainly be used for vocal edits"

In a funny twist of fate in 2012 Scott actually rehearsed a concert production out of Luna Audio which little did he know at the time he would eventually own and rebrand to Qsound Studios.

Console history

Our SSL console in studio A is affectionately referred to as the "Whispering Jack" console because the biggest selling album of all time in Australia ((Whispering Jack for John Farnham) was produced and mixed on this famous SSL console. It's also had INXS, Powderfinger, Silverchair, Darryl Braithwaite, Ross Wilson and more run through its faders. Also visiting international artists like Bon Jovi, Bob Dylan and Dave Growl. The console began its life in the famous Metropolis Audio / Armstrongs AAV in the main studio before being moved to Studio 3 the new purpose built mixing facility. As one of the only 6000 consoles in the country it had all the features of a 4000 but with the added advantage of 6 extra master busses feeding the Quad Bus. Meaning the possibilities for surround sound and multis mixing made it extremely powerful. Like CLA's console ours also features the famous vintage SSL EQ and compressors from the E series with the Famous G bus compressor and the famous G line amps. Ours is a 6048 E/G meaning it has the best of all the SSL vintage flavours. Our console was refurbished by Scott along with the incredible Warren Huck who is no stranger to the SSL's being one of our best techs and also Hugh the pervious owner / tech. This super nerd team were able to get the SSL fully functioning including all the audio pathways, the Automation and recall systems and the Plasma meters! including even implementing new computer automation technology from Canada development labs tangerine. We think we have one of the finest examples of a vintage SSL console anywhere in the world and you'll be hard pressed to find another SSL that sounds as sweet or functions as well as ours.
